To kick off Lawren Harris Week in Brantford, Roald Nasgaard joins us to speak about Lawren Harris and his impact on Canadian art.

This talk is presented as part of Lawren Harris Week in Brantford, and is presented by the Sanderson Centre and the City of Brantford Economic Development and Tourism Department, in partnership with Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant and the members of the Lawren Harris Movement.

Harris’s abstract paintings, which he began in the 1930s, are often thought emotionally remote. In reality they are colourful, energetic and rich in feeling. They strive for spiritual revelation, but stylistically are deeply immersed in the visual culture of contemporary modernity, whether art, industrial design, architecture or photography.

Many Canadians have heard of the Group of Seven, but few know that the man responsible for the formation of the Group of Seven - Lawren S. Harris - was born right here in Brantford.

Recently, Harris' work has made national headlines; in 2016, his painting, Mountain Forms, broke the record for the most expensive Canadian artwork ever sold at auction - $11.21 million. In 2016, an exhibition called The Idea of the North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris traveled through North America. The Idea of the North was co-organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), and was curated by American actor and art collector, Steve Martin, in collaboration Andrew Hunter, Frederik S. Eaton Curator, Canadian Art, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Cynthia Burlingham, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs, Hammer Museum.

In this solo show, stand-up comic and actor Ali Hassan (Man Seeking Woman, Odd Squad, CBC Radio’s Laugh Out Loud) delivers a bitingly funny piece of work on flunking out of Sunday school, ingesting forbidden fruits, and becoming a cultural Muslim. The show is a refreshingly hilarious antidote to our increasingly troubling global climate, delivered by this mainstay star of television, film, radio and stage. Warning: some language content.
