MEN OF THE DEEPS - Christmas in the Mine Tour
First ever Christmas CD by World Famous Chorus
This upcoming holiday season, North America’s only coal miners chorus are preparing to take audienceson a journey like no other, with their first ever solo Christmas album, Christmas in the Mine.
The Men of the Deeps will be visiting theatres, spreading their unique brand of holiday cheer to Ontario audiences in Kingston, Burlington, Brantford, Meaford, Welland, North Bay, Deep River, Ottawa, Markham, St. Catharines and Chatham.
Men of the Deeps Conductor Stephen Muise, says the project marks the first ever solo recording of Christmas music from the choir in their entire fifty-one year history. “We’re always busy performing during the holidays, so we do have some great holiday tunes in our repertoire, but we’ve never had the opportunity to record them, until now. Those songs and stories were important to capture. Now we have them to share forever.” !
The Christmas in the Mine CD includes not only your favourite holiday tunes, but also serves up a thoughtful Christmas recollection by the group’s signature story teller “Big Jim” MacLellan. Men of the Deeps live performances are always sprinkled with a spoken moment or two from one of the members, to the delight of any audience. “Those stories told by the men always hit home because they’re not borrowed tall tales, but true stories that these miners have lived,” says Muise.
Of course, no Men of the Deeps Christmas collection would be complete without the inclusion of the choir’s favourite stage sister, the late, great, Rita McNeil. “Rita’s music and her memory are very important to every member of the choir. The men
cherish their long history of friendship and collaboration with her, so we’ve included two Rita songs on this CD,” says Muise. “We’re proud to say, one of those songs features the beautiful voice of Rankin Family 1 of "2 songstress, Heather Rankin. We think Rita would be pleased.” The collection also includes an original offering from award-winning singer/songwriter Matt Andersen. For the tour performances, the singing miners intend to bring their CD to life on stage; to take audiences
underground, to share the true experience of celebrating Christmas in a real coal mine, jolly miner style.
